Retail branding consultancy, Lemley Design, sweeps first annual Graphic Design: USA’s InStore Design Competition. With five awards, Lemley Design topped all other submitting firms for winning entries. The award winners were featured in the March 2007 issue of Graphic Design: USA, the country’s leading monthly trade magazine for the graphic design industry and read by over 100,000 design professionals and clients.

“We are humbled to receive recognition from such an esteemed publication,” states David Lemley, President and Chief Brand Strategist for Lemley Design. “Our firm’s primary focus is to create a design strategy that integrates the brand voice in every aspect of the design process.” He explains, “The design industry is no longer about creating esthetically pleasing or killer design, it’s about defining and communicating the brand within the elements of design.”

Published for over 40 years, Graphic Design: USA has sponsored the American Graphic Design Awards for over 30 years. This was the first year that the publication has sponsored an InStore Graphic Design Awards category. After receiving hundreds of entries from design firms, ad agencies, retailers and manufacturers, only 10% were selected as winners. According to the publication, the new award focuses on “the critical focus where graphic and package design make the difference in where consumers shop, what they see and what they buy.”

The publication also acknowledges that, “retailers are challenged as never before to convey their message, and to differentiate themselves and their products.” The Instore Design category was created by Graphic Design: USA in order to emphasize the critical importance of ‘package’ and ‘point-of-purchase’ design for the retail industry.

“Retailers today face ever increasing challenges in the ‘experience economy,’ explains Lemley. “Leaders within both the retail and design industries recognize the importance of extending the brand message into every aspect of design and into the overall operations of the company.”
