Judging The Lotus Awards
Vancouver BC is even rainier than Seattle. Its true. Last weekend I had the honor of serving with Sarah Barclay, Kristen Curtis, Fabio Costa, Monique Gamache, Tim Gordon, PJ Pereira and Bob Pullum as a judge for the 2008 Lotus Awards, Western Canada’s regional creative showcase. We each gave a mini-presentation the evening before the judging to a room of about 300 mildly drunken Canadian Art Directors in a venue that reminded me of Mad Max Beyond Thunder Dome. The theme, Proving Your Worth was an unfortunate topic as a judge because it begs one to be self important. Instead I tried to be a somewhat spiritual stand-up comic.

Now About the work in the show: The advertising was better than what I saw at RACie earlier this year, but the design work was not amazing. After speaking at length with the show organizers I think its because the show, traditionally an advertising venue, has been viewed as irrelevant to the many brilliant interactive and graphics studios in and around Vancouver. Listen up: Enter next year and dominate the field.
My bio from the event brochure makes me sound like a boring, serious stuffed shirt. WTF? Rewriting my bio to include the fact that I did not win the eigth grade talent show lip-syncing Detroit Rock City in full Kiss regalia, and worked at a sausage factory outlet before entering the design field.
